The Philomath Warriors traveled to Newport to face the Cubs. This was a non-league matchup and the first test of the season for both of these teams. Philomath High School triumphed over Newport 46-10, featuring dynamic plays, including a 90-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Russell to Rocco De La Rosa, who also returned a kickoff 83 yards for another score. Philomath’s offense racked up 347 yards, with Russell throwing for 253 yards and four touchdowns. De La Rosa amassed 226 all-purpose yards. Despite early miscues, Philomath’s defense and offensive line excelled, forcing several turnovers and taking advantage of Newport’s mistakes. By halftime, Philomath held a commanding 40-3 lead, and the second half was played with a running clock. Their next game is against Milwaukie.
